Itztli Candle

Itztli (EETS-tli), the Nahuatl word for obsidian, honors one of the most revered materials in Mesoamerican life. This volcanic glass (cooled to a mirror-black edge sharper than steel) was fashioned into the ceremonial blades, spear points, and macuahuitl war clubs that shaped both daily life and ritual, and polished into the scrying mirrors priests and nobility used to look for omens in the dark. So central was this stone to Mexica cosmology that it was personified as its own deity, closely bound to Tezcatlipoca, the "Smoking Mirror”, lord of night, memory, and transformation, whose obsidian mirror was said to reflect not the world as it appeared, but as it truly was. This candle captures that duality: sharp and smoldering, polished and unknowable.

Notes of peppercorn and barrel-aged rum smolder into smoky leather and balsamic sandalwood, while hemp and solar bergamot cut through like light catching a blade's edge. Light it to conjure candlelight on volcanic glass, a ritual half-remembered, a mirror that shows more than it should. Itztli is a reminder that the quietest, most obsidian-dark things often forged in fire and chaos brings out the warrior in all of us.
