Plumeria (the flower Laos calls dok champa) didn't begin in Southeast Asia at all. It's native to Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean, blooming across tropical hillsides long before it ever crossed an ocean. Spanish colonizers carried it west along the galleon trade routes into Asia, and something unexpected happened once it arrived: the flower took root, culturally as much as botanically. It became so admired that Laos eventually named it its national flower, decorating women's hair, offered at temples, planted outside nearly every home. Lochampa carries that entire improbable journey in one scent. Light it as a reminder that beauty doesn't always respect borders.
